A few months ago I tore a picture of these Miller Goodman blocks out of Elle Decoration and figured they might be tough to find in the US. Lo and behold I found them last month on the Wooden Wagon's website and snatched them up without thinking twice. Playing with blocks is a daily ritual in the Chafey house, it is play that we can all loose ourselves in and can be so relaxing at days end.
When the box arrived I worried a bit that perhaps I had bought myself a toy, but once the boys got their hand on them I was quickly proven wrong. The blocks were everywhere in no time and dinner was postponed by almost an hour. Even our dog settled in on the action.
It took a little time to find our rhythm with them. It helped to build out a few of the forms pictured on the box. Miller Goodman has a flickr stream for Playshapes and that got our wheels in motion.
I kept making things with faces and trying to spell out our names. At first, each creation was sacred – R would make sure I photographed everything he made before making something new. He was drawn to the curvy shapes and tried to use the moustache in everything he built. Ever the engineer, Tyler went straight to work on building impossible structures using balance and surface tension as his secret weapons.
